About me

Photo of Sam Hardacre

I've been interested in art as far back as I can remember. All the way through school I spent most of my time drawing whatever was in my head and happens still, although my interests have developed since those simple days so my time is shared amongst other activites.

Design

My interest in Graphic and Web design sprouted only recently in the last couple of years. I've always enjoyed looking at things, packaging, magazines, billboards etc, and trying to explain why I like a particular design. It was always very basic judgements about colour and layout but through reading books and blogs, I have a greater understanding of the intricacies of design. Learning about hierarchy, typography, grid layout etc, came quite easy to me, but I still have much to explore and learn. Although I'm new to offline design, I have the knowledge to succeed and won't stop until I do.

My style is definitely in constant state of evolution, but I love mixing material and handmade objects with digital. When done right, the effect can be very beautiful. I've put this into practice with my own site design and also on other projects. You can see my completed work on my portfolio page.

Web development

I've been working on the web now for almost 5 years. I got my break by chance in the local pub when I met the CEO of my company. I got a job initially doing general work around the office and never really did much work relating to producing websites, however, during the time period I worked, I caught the bug and began learning HTML. Back in those days I wasn't aware of the existence of people like Jeffrey Zeldman or Andy Clarke, so my coding was extremely bad by todays standards.

Thankfully, I caught on pretty early about this stuff called Web Standards and CSS and started to immerse myself in this constantly changing world of learning. I found it very easy to learn and write CSS and before I knew it I was providing most of the front end code for some major clients

I constantly strive to improve my skills and knowledge to make the work I do on the web as clean and simple as possible. I can design with the web in mind and have developed my skills to the point where I can now drum up basic, flexible layouts in a very short amount of time.

Book(s) I've been reading

Microformats: Empowering Your Markup for Web 2.0

Image of Microformats book cover

John Allsopp is the author of the first major book on the subject of Microformats. The book offers detailed information taking you from the beginnings of Microformats to showing you how you can implement them and gain the benefits. Each chapter handles a different Microformat and gets right down to the fine details, what each element does and why it is useful to include. I've strayed away from Microformats for a long time fearing they are some scary new language that will take forever to learn. If you're in the same boat, I encourage you to take the plunge with this book, all fears will be laid to rest.

Film(s) I've been watching

The Planet of the Apes Collection

DVD sleeve design of The Planet of the Apes Collection

Although the quality wanes as the series progresses, I still think the stories are great. They're pretty dated by todays standards but there's no better way to spend a few hours than watching apes running around trying to kill any human they see. The realism of the ape makeup is quite laughable but then again so is the idea of Jar Jar Binks being a good character, so you've got to let people off sometimes. A definite plus is that you can pick it up for about a tenner.

What clients say

With a defined and professional style to his designs, I was quick to hire Sam for the artwork of my One Phat DJ podcast. The first commissioned piece went down a storm so it made sense to ask Sam to create a follow up piece. We have now arranged an ongoing contract to continue designing artwork for the podcast.
